President Obama targets new gun control laws in State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON — Jobs and the economy were supposed to be the focus of his speech, but President Obama’s demand that Congress vote on a series of new gun controls brought down the House at his State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Obama dutifully ticked off modest measures to create jobs. He warmed up on foreign policy and won cheers on voting rights. But eyes teared and applause rang out when the President invoked the deadly rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School and other shooting tragedies as he called on Congress to act on each of his proposals to curb gun violence.
